Stuart J. Freedman of law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., was elected President of the Rutgers Living History Society at the group’s annual meeting in New Brunswick on Friday, April 26.

Founded in 2002, the Rutgers Living History Society is an honor society established to recognize those persons who participate in or loyally support the practice of oral history at Rutgers University and to generate enthusiasm and support for the practice of oral history at the University.  Membership is automatically extended to all who participate in the interview process at the Rutgers Oral History Archives.  Membership may also be extended to those who, while they have not contributed personal histories, have shown their support for Rutgers Oral History Archives by their noteworthy financial contributions or their helpful professional or executive guidance and advice.

A resident of Fairfield, Freedman has been active in Rutgers University alumni activities. He served as President of the Rutgers Class of 1962, and was recognized by the Rutgers Alumni Association as a Loyal Son of Rutgers in 2012 for his distinguished service to the University.

Freedman has substantial experience both as a private practitioner and as in-house counsel. He practices in a variety of areas within the firm, including trade regulation, advertising, professional liability, insurance, internet law, distribution, publishing, and litigation management. With more than 22 years of experience in the corporate world as in-house counsel, he is well-versed in recognizing the needs and concerns of businesses, especially those involved in the production, distribution, and/or sales of consumer goods and services.

Freedman has served as chief legal officer of three major U.S. corporations involved in consumer goods, insurance, and distribution. He was general counsel of Sedgwick, Inc., then the nation’s third largest insurance broker, for five years. In addition, he has written and lectured extensively on trade regulation and the management of a corporation’s legal affairs and its internal law department, and has assisted in the start-up and management of a number of in-house legal departments.

In corporate law, he has conducted shareholder meetings and reviewed press releases, earnings reports, and other disclosure requirements of companies belonging to the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ. In addition, he has served as President of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries (New York Region) and the New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association.

Freedman earned his J.D., cum laude, from Columbia University in 1965 and his B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Rutgers University in 1962. He is a member of the New Jersey State and American Bar Associations.

Stuart J. Freedman Honored with Loyal Son of Rutgers Award

Bridgewater, NJ (April 2, 2012) – Stuart J. Freedman, a Member of Bridgewater-based law firm Norris McLaughlin, P.A., has been named a Loyal Son of Rutgers. He was honored at an awards dinner on Saturday, March 31, at the Neilson Dining Hall on the Cook/Douglass Campus. The award recognizes his extraordinary service to Rutgers, including serving as President of the Rutgers Class of 1962 since 2008.

For over 50 years, the Rutgers Alumni Association has honored volunteers who made a meaningful and long-standing commitment to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. This year’s class of ten outstanding “Loyal Sons and Daughters” is comprised of a diverse group of alumni who distinguished themselves through outstanding service to Rutgers or made a significant impact on university life and culture.
